Reed was born on June 25, 1942. He was selected by the Knicks in the eighth place in the second round at the draft conference in 1964. he worked for the Knicks in 10 seasons and served as a center/power forward.

Reed won two NBA championships in his career, one NBA regular season MVP(1970), two NBA Finals MVP, one All-Star MVP and five NBA best team, he was selected as the best defensive team once and the All-Star team for seven times. He was elected NBA Rookie of the Year award in the rookie season.
In 1981, Reed was elected to the Nye Smith Basketball Hall of Fame. In 1997, Reed was selected as the top 50 stars in NBA history. In October 2021, Reed was selected as the top 75 stars in NBA history.
